On Monday the Reds and Joey Votto agreed to a 10-year, $225 million contract extension. Here’s some of the reaction from around the city and around Major League Baseball, as expressed on Twitter.

Around Cincinnati:

Lance McAlister ‏ @LanceMcAlister
Votto a Red through 2023…….say that slowly and out loud

Lance McAlister ‏ @LanceMcAlister
reaction to Votto news has created the single most interesting day on Twitter I can ever recall. Celebration, concern, joy, fear, ….

Joel Luckhaupt ‏ @jluckhaupt
If Pujols was Votto’s age, he would gotten $50-$100M more for his total contract. That’s the reason their deals are comparable. #Reds

Brad Johansen @bradjohansen
That’s serious Opening Day Fireworks. $225 mil, no trade clause, lrgst nati deal ever, 4th lrgst MLB, #Votto a #red thru 2023, Play ball!

Around the country: Votto’s mammoth deal is shock to system

Jon Heyman ‏ @JonHeymanCBS
have to say, great job by #reds owner bob castellini to keep votto in small-market cincy for 10 years, ’til votto is 38

Buster Olney ‏ @Buster_ESPN
To put the Votto deal in perspective: Only Alex Rodriguez has generated a bigger deal. Incredible commitment by Reds, significant risk.

Jim Bowden ‏ @JimBowdenESPNxm
Joey Votto deal right where it belongs…below Pujols and above Fielder

Jon Morosi ‏ @jonmorosi
Context on Joey Votto deal: Cincinnati is the smallest local television market (Nielsen DMA) in the United States among #MLB cities. #Reds

Jon Morosi ‏ @jonmorosi
When you have a $7 billion industry (annual revenues), with $2.15 billion franchises, contracts of $200 million aren’t that absurd. #Votto

Andrew Brandt ‏ @adbrandt
Fully guaranteed portion of contract: Peyton Manning: $18 million. Joey Votto: $225 million.

Bob Nightengale ‏ @BNightengale
Joey Votto is the 1st player in #MLB to now be under under contract through 2023. Albert Pujols’ playing contract expires after 2021. #Reds
